Session 2:  Equipment & boat adjustment, safety, & technique enhancement

Rowing

  1. Able to do a 4-way safety check of access holes, riggers, "pins", and gates.
  2. Do a 4-way boat adjustment for: leg length, rib touch, crossover, & oar height.
  3. Enter the boat using hip transfer, two-leg, one-leg, or river send off methods.
  4. Be able to push away from the dock by safely pivoting off the stern or oar.
  5. Show 4 drills that will continually improve your rowing..
  6. Demonstrate a full-cycle quick out drill without getting oars stuck in the water.
  7. Go through warm up drills: open hand, hooked catch, and quick out drills.
  8. Successfully use a 6-banana recovery drill before the next stroke.
  9. Successfully propel the boat at least 50 meters in fewer than 10 strokes.
Kayaking
  1. Do a 4-way boat safety check of hatches, hull bottom, screws along the gunwales, and bulkheads - flotation chambers.
  2. Do a 4-way equipment adjustment for: leg length, backrest, steering tension, and spray skirt placement.
  3. Enter the boat using a paddle brace when sitting, squatting, and standing.
  4. Push away from the dock or shore with a high brace or pivoting with the hull.
  5. Demonstrate 4 basic drills that will continually improve your paddling.
  6. Perform the 5 essential skills necessary to use equipment at other outfitter locations.
  7. Under power, turn the hull 50 degrees in 10 strokes using the kayak heart stroke.
  8. Successfully deploy the paddle float; describe 4 ways to exit a spray skirt.
  9. Apply crank speed and glide to go at least 50 meters in 6 - 9 complete strokes.
Sailing
  1. Use dead reckoning to set or change upwind and downwind courses.
  2. Push off the dock and quickly set sails in winds greater than 10 knots.
  3. Adjust the standing rigging, set the centerboard, and insert the batten.
  4. Be able to tie and know when to use 3 knots: figure 8, bowline, and cleat tie.
  5. Complete a "man overboard" rescue drill with a PFD in 30 seconds or less.
  6. When beating, be able to set the tell tails by adjusting the jib or tiller.
  7. When performing a downwind jibe, hand retract the boom to avoid problems.
  8. Demonstrate close haul, beam reach, and running positions of the boom.
  9. Secure the boat after sailing by folding the sails, securing halyards, & cleating.
